Dear Chair Poytress:
RE: Nanton A. B. Daley Community School (Livingstone Range School Division)
Since the October 21st release by the School Division entitled LRSD Seeks Solution for Nanton Schools, there has been much discussion in both the community at large and at the Council table.
The following resolution was passed at the Regular Meeting of Nanton Council on November 21st 2022:
RESOLUTION # 372 - 22/11/21 – Miller
Moved to forward correspondence to the Livingstone Range School Division to convey support by the Council of the Town of Nanton, in principle, for the initiative to replace J.T. Foster High School with a new build; however, emphasizing that this Council remains adamant that A.B. Daley School remain as an elementary school as the appropriate solution for this community. CARRIED
A.B Daley Community School is a much-loved building that ably accommodates the needs of K-6 students for the long term, already with a gymnasium designed for high school level sports and existing capacity for pre-school. The priority for this community is the urgent and overdue replacement of J.T. Foster School for grades 7-12 with a new building suitable for its students. In the view of Council, it is that project that is needed as soon as possible, not the construction of a new elementary school which further delays a new high school.
Council supports your efforts and enthusiasm, but equally urges a return to the ‘Nanton Solution’ that has held broad consensus here over many years and was well discussed in the June value scoping exercise.
Yours sincerely,
Town of Nanton
Mayor Jennifer Handley
