The Town is now urging the public to voluntarily cease all non-critical outdoor irrigation activities with immediate effect to avoid the municipality having to suspend watering permits formally and move to Level 3 (Critical) restrictions. It's time to let the lawn go brown and harvest any remaining fruit and vegetables.
"The Highwood River is now at historic lows. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation are no longer able to divert water into the headworks system. This has been occurring on/off throughout the summer in response to the river reaching daily temperature thresholds. At this point we are exceeding both temperature and minimum flow thresholds, requiring the diversion to cease."
While to the naked eye, Nanton's reservoir would appear to be at decent levels and still pumping at present, the closure of the diversion this early could mean significant storage challenges over the winter if it is not full come early October. We need your help to keep that reservoir as full as it can be going into winter.
Significant additional information will be provided and circulated if the Town has to move to Level 3 (Critical) restrictions.
